More about the church town

Gammelstad Church Town

Gammelstad Church Town comprises church cottages, a mediaeval stone church, private homes, a parish storehouse and much more. A great deal has happened in Gammelstad since the 15th century, when the church was built. This is where Luleå grew from a small church and trading site into a real town. It was found necessary to move the town at the end of the 17th century, and people began to call the Church Town "Luleå gamla stad", popularly known as "Gammelstad" - which simply means old town.
Many people, from the outlying villages and from further afield have visited Luleå. Among the more prominent visitors was Carl Linnaeus, who arrived at Gammelstad around Midsummer 1732, when he was aged just 25.
